Urges companies to adopt best privacy practices

FTC Unveils Report on Consumer PrivacyThe Federal Trade Commission recently conducted a study into how everyone from consumers to companies and the government can protect consumers' privacy.

The resulting report, which was entitled, "Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change: A Proposed Framework for Businesses and Policymakers," says that companies need to do more to give consumers greater control of their privacy online, the FTC said. Further, it recommended that lawmakers need to do more to enact privacy legislation, as well as bills related to data security and data breach notifications.

"If companies adopt our final recommendations for best practices - and many of them already have - they will be able to innovate and deliver creative new services that consumers can enjoy without sacrificing their privacy," said Jon Leibowitz, chairman of the FTC.

Leibowitz added that there should be an effective Do Not Track feature available online by the end of 2012, the report said.
